Quick answer: Set up Google Ads for a Shopify brand in this order: clean purchase tracking, a healthy Merchant Center product feed, then three campaigns: brand Search, non-brand Search on high-intent keywords, and Shopping or Performance Max for your products. Use the search terms report, negative keywords and channel reporting to keep Performance Max honest, and set your ROAS targets from your margin, not from Google’s suggestions.

Meta creates demand. Google captures it. When someone types “buy cold-pressed hair oil online” or “best protein bar without sugar”, they are already looking to buy. For a Shopify brand in India, that intent is the cheapest growth you can get, if the account is set up properly.

In this guide

Step 1: Get conversion tracking right

Smart bidding learns from the conversions you tell it to chase. If tracking is wrong, Google optimises for the wrong thing, very efficiently.

  • Connect Shopify with Google’s official Google & YouTube app, or install the Google tag directly. Use one method, not both.
  • Make Purchase your only primary conversion. Keep add to cart, page views and sign-ups as secondary, so they don’t steer bidding.
  • Turn on enhanced conversions so Google can match more purchases securely.
  • Make sure purchase values are consistent. Decide whether they include tax and shipping, and keep it that way.
  • Don’t count the same purchase twice, for example a Google Ads tag and an imported GA4 purchase both set as primary.

Step 2: Fix your Merchant Center product feed

Shopping and Performance Max ads are built from your product feed. A weak feed means weak ads, whatever your bids.

  • Titles: lead with what people search: brand, product type and key attributes such as size, colour, material or flavour.
  • Images: clean, well-lit product shots that work at thumbnail size.
  • Price and availability: must match your website exactly, or products get disapproved.
  • Identifiers: add GTINs where your products have them.
  • Disapprovals: check the Diagnostics tab every week and fix issues quickly.

Step 3: A simple campaign structure for D2C brands

CampaignWhat it doesTips
Brand SearchCaptures people searching your brand nameLow budget, exact and phrase match, protects you from competitors bidding on your name
Non-brand SearchCaptures high-intent category searchesTight keyword themes such as “buy [product] online” and “best [product] for [need]”
Shopping or Performance MaxShows your products across Google surfacesFeed-driven. Use brand exclusions so it doesn’t take credit for brand searches
Remarketing and YouTubeBrings back visitors and builds demandAdd later, once the core three are profitable

Most brands don’t need more than this to start. More campaigns split your budget and slow down learning.

Step 4: Run Performance Max without flying blind

Performance Max used to be a black box. Google has added real controls since 2025, so use them. According to Google’s own announcement, you now get:

  • A search terms report for Performance Max campaigns, so you can see what people actually searched.
  • Campaign-level negative keywords and shared negative keyword lists, to block irrelevant or low-quality searches.
  • Channel performance reporting, showing how Search, Shopping, YouTube and other channels contribute.
  • Asset reporting with conversions and cost, so you know which images and videos work.
  • Age and device controls, for when your product only suits certain buyers.

Review search terms weekly and add negatives for searches that will never buy, such as “free”, “DIY” or competitor job listings.

Step 5: Set targets on margin, not on Google’s ROAS

Work out your break-even ROAS first. The formula is simple: break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ contribution margin. If you keep 40% of each sale after product cost, shipping, payment fees and packaging, your break-even ROAS is 1 ÷ 0.40 = 2.5. Anything below that loses money on the first order.

Start new campaigns on Maximise conversion value. Add a target ROAS once the campaign has a steady flow of conversions, and set it at or above break-even. Then judge results on what actually reached your bank, not just on Google’s dashboard.

What’s different for Shopify brands in India

  • COD and RTO: Google counts a purchase when the order is placed. If many COD orders get cancelled, use conversion adjustments to retract them where you can, and track delivered revenue separately.
  • Festive season: search volume and competition both jump around Diwali and big sale weeks. Raise budgets before the peak, not during it.
  • Mobile-first checkout: most buyers arrive on a phone. A slow page or a broken UPI flow wastes your clicks.
  • Search language: check your search terms for Hinglish and regional spellings, and add the ones that convert as keywords.

Common Google Ads mistakes to avoid

  • Counting add to cart or page views as primary conversions.
  • Broad match keywords with no negatives and no smart bidding.
  • Letting Performance Max spend on your own brand searches.
  • Ignoring the product feed while tweaking bids.
  • Leaving Search Partners and the Display Network switched on in Search campaigns without checking their results.
  • Judging a new campaign in its first week.

FAQs

Is Google Ads worth it for a small Shopify brand in India?

Yes, if people already search for your product type. Start small with brand Search and a Shopping or Performance Max campaign, get tracking right, and grow from there.

Should I use Performance Max or Standard Shopping?

Performance Max suits most brands once tracking and the product feed are clean, especially now that it has a search terms report and negative keywords. Standard Shopping gives more control for small budgets and product tests.

How do I connect Shopify to Google Ads?

The simplest way is Google’s official Google & YouTube app for Shopify. It syncs your products to Merchant Center and can set up conversion tracking. Make sure Purchase is your only primary conversion afterwards.

What ROAS should I target on Google Ads?

Start from your break-even ROAS, which is 1 divided by your contribution margin. Set your target at or above that number, then adjust based on delivered revenue, not just reported conversions.
